Museums and cultural institutions remain closed. We are pleased that we can stay connected with our visitors even during the closure through our newsletter, the museum blog, and Facebook. We are even more excited about 2021, when we hope to once again offer a place for cultural exchange in line with our motto, “See for yourself—encounter the real.”

On Christmas Eve, the 24th door of the Advent calendar will be opened. In a video, museum director Dr. Anita Auer offers a short guided tour of the tapestry depicting the Nativity (antependium, ca. 1500).
This has been a particularly challenging year, both culturally and socially, which has also posed challenges for museums and led us to choose an online format for our Christmas program this year:
The video will be available on our website, www.franziskanermuseum.de, starting on Christmas Eve.
The team at the Franciscan Museum would like to take this opportunity to wish you a merry and healthy Christmas. Stay tuned, and please visit us again in the new year, 2021!

Unfortunately, we must cancel the planned Advent calendar tours due to the ongoing museum closure. The printed Advent calendar is still available for purchase in the museum shop at the Franziskaner for 5 euros. Behind the 24 doors, you’ll discover objects from all departments of our museum. By purchasing the calendar, you’ll be supporting the museum, which is facing significant revenue losses this year.

The popular exhibition featuring Ingeborg Jaag’s Carnival figures will showcase a parade in miniature starting January 6, 2021. Provided the museum is able to reopen on Epiphany, the opening reception—in cooperation with the Historische Narrozunft—will take place on Wednesday, January 6, at 3:00 p.m., in the concert hall of the Franziskaner Kulturzentrum. Registration via email to franziskanermuseum@villingen-schwenningen.de and compliance with current hygiene regulations are required.
Planned exhibition dates: January 6 through February 21, 2021

The Franziskanermuseum and the Historische Narrozunft Villingen are receiving a special award for their exceptional museum presentation of the major 2020 Carnival exhibition. VSAN President Roland Wehrle announced that the special award is presented only in exceptional cases to honor groundbreaking and creative scholarly achievements: “With this project, which garnered significant public attention, you have set new standards in the research and presentation of the genealogy of the traditional masked figures not only of the city of Villingen but also of the entire Baar region.”

The fourth poster in the new image campaign is titled “Truly Heartfelt” and features a glass schnapps bottle with a heart motif, which was likely a gift of love.
The poster series, featuring five selected objects from the Franziskanermuseum, is now available in the museum shop. The A1-sized digital prints are sold individually for 2.50 euros and as a set of all five designs for 10 euros.
The series features the following five “pleasure” motifs:
“Truly Sweet” – SABA TV
; “Truly Spicy” – Celtic daggers
; “Truly Savory” – courtly love chest; “Truly Hearty” – Black Forest glass
; “Truly Crisp” – Tipp-Kick figure

The Stone Age was the longest era in human history. What artifacts and findings have been uncovered in the Villingen-Schwenningen area? Peter Graßmann explores the evidence in his blog.

The opening of the new special exhibition “Trophy and Six-Pack: Sports in Industrial Society” was scheduled for November 22, 2020. The exhibition and its extensive accompanying program will be open to the public as soon as the museums reopen.
