Franciscan Monastery

The Franciscan Museum is located in the heart of downtown Villingen, in a former Franciscan monastery complex dating from the 13th to the 18th century. The historic walls that now house the exhibition rooms are a museum in their own right. From the church, which now serves as a concert hall, to the small monks’ cells in the section dedicated to the town’s history, visitors follow in the footsteps of the Barefoot Franciscans.

Particularly worth seeing are the cloister with its Gothic tracery windows and the sacristy with its elaborate ceiling paintings.

Through the wall

The History of the Franciscan Monastery, Retold.

An intermedia film presents the eventful history of the construction and use of the Franciscan monastery in an entertaining and surprising way over the course of about 10 minutes, from the Franciscan monks’ arrival in Villingen through periods of war and plague to its current use.

The short film (in German or English) can be played during opening hours
at the standing desk in the center of the concert hall.
