Museums Closed

All museums and cultural institutions nationwide must close to the
public starting November 2, 2020. This regulation will initially remain in effect through November 30, 2020.
Even while the Villingen-Schwenningen Municipal Museums are closed, we want to stay connected with our visitors. News, behind-the-scenes insights, and features on museum objects will be posted on the museum blog STADT HOCH ZWEI or on the Franziskanermuseum’s Facebook page. We welcome every new fan!

CANCELED!

Special Exhibition: Doll Stove and Rocking Horse. Toys Through the Centuries

Toys accompany us through childhood and can remain companions well into adulthood. Looking back on these cherished items later in life is often tinged with melancholy—a longing for a time filled with imagination, joy, and a sense of security. Outwardly, toys have changed over the centuries—yet the observation by Russian author Maxim Gorky remains as true as ever: “Play is the path to understanding the world.”

The opening of this atmospheric Christmas-themed toy exhibition has been postponed from the originally planned November date to Tuesday, December 1. Due to the current situation, the exhibition will not open with a traditional vernissage but with a “soft opening” from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Exhibition dates: December 1, 2020, through January 10, 2021

Admission: 3 euros, reduced rate 2 euros

Advent Calendar: Anticipation Turns into Delight

With our Advent calendar, we’d like to help make the long wait from the first Sunday of Advent to Christmas Eve a little shorter. Behind the calendar’s doors are images of 24 museum objects from the Franziskanermuseum’s permanent exhibition. Each door also serves as a coupon for a short guided tour of the corresponding exhibit, for which purchasers receive free admission.

The limited-edition coupon Advent calendar is now available for 5 euros at the Tourist Information & Ticket Service in the foyer of the Franziskaner Cultural Center. In November, the new opening hours are Monday–Friday: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Sunday: closed.
The short guided tours will take place on the corresponding day in December at 2 p.m., led by a volunteer or a museum staff member. On December 24, the tour will be offered online with museum director Dr. Anita Auer. To participate in the tours, we recommend registering by phone at 07721 / 82-2351.

We would like to thank the Friends of the Municipal Museums in Villingen-Schwenningen e.V. and all those involved for their support of this project.

Part 3: Truly Spicy

The early 15th-century courtly love chest is a highlight of the permanent exhibition on the city’s history and was selected as one of the objects for the Franciscan Museum’s new image campaign. On this small wooden chest with its exquisite carvings, you’ll also discover some decidedly risqué scenes. Come see for yourself as soon as we reopen after our temporary closure!
