On May 13, we will open our special exhibition “KULT(UR)WALD: The Settlement of the Black Forest” in the concert hall. Join us in celebrating the opening of our first major special exhibition after a two-year hiatus. We promise an entertaining and informative opening reception with guests from all over Baden-Württemberg, and we look forward to lively conversation in our foyer afterward. No registration is required.

The special exhibition “KULT(UR)WALD: The Settlement of the Black Forest” is part of the celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of Villingen-Schwenningen. Running from May 14 to October 16, 2022, it showcases the most important finds and insights into the prehistory and early history of the Black Forest, thereby shedding light on the earliest history of today’s twin city. During your visit to the
exhibition, you’ll learn that the Black Forest was settled long before the founding of its monasteries and that even before that, it was not an impenetrable, uninhabited “primeval forest.”
The exhibition’s accompanying program features public guided tours, lectures, readings, excursions, and Celtic Day.
> More about the accompanying program

The first guided tours of the KULT(UR)WALD will take place on Sundays, May 15 and 29, at 3 p.m. each day. Exciting discoveries and intriguing insights are guaranteed during the public guided tour of the new special exhibition.

As part of the KULT(UR)WALD exhibition, International Museum Day will offer a contemporary look at the forest. Forestry expert Bastian Kaiser understands the special emotional connection Germans have with their forests. Best-selling books about the forest, such as those by Peter Wohlleben, are booming and shaping public sentiment. But Kaiser is concerned with much more than a romantic relationship with the forest or seemingly simple explanations. With “I’m in the Forest!”, the author aims to dispel myths and misconceptions and present the facts.
Professor Bastian Kaiser is the rector of the Rottenburg University of Forestry and is, among other things, a member of the Baden-Württemberg Sustainability Advisory Board and the German Forestry Council.

The companion book, titled “KULT(UR)WALD: The Settlement of the Black Forest,” provides comprehensive information about the exhibition and much more. The book is self-published by the City of Villingen-Schwenningen and the Municipal Museums, edited by Peter Graßmann (project director of the Franziskanermuseum) and archaeologists Dorothee Ade and Lisa Rademacher. Through several richly illustrated essays, the book explores the fascinating question of why the Black Forest should be regarded as an ancient cultural region.
The companion book is available at the exhibition and in the museum shop for 12 euros.

In the upcoming “In the Spotlight” tour, Stephan Rößler, director of the Städtische Galerie Villingen-Schwenningen, will be a guest at the Franziskanermuseum. During a short tour, he will present his favorite object from the collection. Afterward, the Friends of the Municipal Museums in Villingen-Schwenningen invite visitors to join them for refreshments in the foyer.
