It is currently unclear how long the museum will remain closed. We therefore ask that you check our website and Facebook page for updates. Due to the current situation surrounding the SARS-CoV-2 virus, Celtic Day at the Franziskaner on Sunday, May 24, 2020, must also be canceled.

The Franciscan Museum’s audio guide certainly can’t replace an actual visit to the exhibition halls of the former Franciscan monastery. But especially during times when no events are taking place, the museum app can offer an alternative source of interesting information about the highlights of the collection and some fascinating anecdotes. The short audio clips can be listened to individually and cover the sections on city history, the Celtic princely tomb at Magdalenenberg, and the Black Forest collection.

Villingen and Schwenningen have been through a lot. The towns were hit particularly hard in 1816–1817. The cause of the hunger and suffering lay on the other side of the world—yet awareness of global crises was still very limited. Read more on the STADT HOCH 2 museum blog.

Why are there Oriental figures depicted on many objects in the Franciscan Museum? Who is Irene, the woman celebrated in song by the Franciscan monks? And were the people of Villingen on the verge of saving Vienna? Peter Graßmann takes a look at Villingen’s connections to the Turkish Wars of the 16th and 17th centuries.

We very much hope to welcome you back in person at the Franciscan Museum soon. In the meantime, we wish you good health and all the best!
Take advantage of the beautiful weather to take a walk to the Magdalenenberg burial mound, one of the most impressive legacies of the Celtic world. The significance of the archaeological site in Villingen-Schwenningen and the Franziskanermuseum’s related educational outreach efforts were highlighted in December 2019 at the KeltenWelten e.V. awards ceremony.

Due to the current situation, the following rule applies to all Museums-PASS-Musées with an expiration date after March 13, 2020: The expiration date has been extended by two months. The new expiration date can be viewed in your online profile or on the Museums-PASS-Musées website. As soon as the Tourist Information & Ticket Service at the Franziskaner reopens, Museum-PASS-Musées will be sold and renewed there in person, as before.

We have plenty of it, because there’s nothing to miss outside our own four walls: This is what Dr. Michael Hütt writes in the blog STADT HOCH 2, and at the same time, on behalf of the Watch Industry Museum, he issues a call to the residents of Villingen-Schwenningen.
