This year, Ingeborg Jaag’s Carnival figures will gather right on time for Epiphany in the permanent exhibition at the Franziskanermuseum. The 2020 exhibition focuses on the Wuescht group.
The exhibition is presented in cooperation with the Historische Narrozunft Villingen e.V.
The long-awaited major Carnival exhibition by the Franciscan Museum and the Historische Narrozunft Villingen e.V. will be officially opened in the concert hall. The exhibition runs through March 29, 2020.
What does the Villingen Narro have to do with the Commedia dell’arte or modern pop culture? What do his accessories—such as collars and bells—signify? The Carnival exhibition sets out to explore the Narro’s connections, both within Carnival and beyond.

The Franciscan Museum’s new exhibition is not only of interest to Villingen residents or Carnival enthusiasts. It situates the Villingen Narro within the context of carnival figures from the surrounding region, as well as within European cultural history. It also highlights connections to everyday culture and current trends, offering a “glimpse behind the mask” by letting the participants themselves have their say.

A catalog accompanying the exhibition features essays by Anita Auer, Peter Graßmann, Dominik Wunderlin, Günter Schenk, and Alexander Brüderle. The exhibition’s themes—such as the distant connection between Carnival and modern pop culture—are explored and examined in greater depth. It also includes interviews with Carnival enthusiasts who share how they caught the Carnival bug and what they find most wonderful about the Villingen tradition.
The book will be released at the opening and is available for 9.50 euros at the museum ticket office and at the special exhibition. Posters and postcards are also now on sale.
The fool, daydreaming to himself, never in a million years would have imagined this: In his dream, his devilish, foolish, hunchbacked relatives—the whole lot of them—actually cross his path. Hell! Hell! Hell! And all because two clumsy fools, conceived within the city walls, are watching the Fasnet-Zieschdich parade. And when they start asking themselves the big questions, they get a white-and-blue surprise in an unexpected leap through fools’ time.

Every child wants to dress up. Using plenty of imagination, we’ll help the children craft the typical accessories of Villingen Carnival. A jester’s collar can be folded out of paper. The homemade, hand-painted wooden snuff boxes are perfect for storing treasures and candy. Equipped with homemade costumes and painted, decorated masks, many little Narros and Mäschgerle will skip home.
The workshop for families with children ages 4 and up is led by master student Anna-Maria Saurer.

A supporting program for the Carnival exhibition “Family Secrets: The Narro and All His Baggage”
Curator Ina Sahl will offer a short guided tour of the exhibition featuring carnival figures in doll size. Following the tour, refreshments will be served, along with a carnival performance by the Wuescht group at the Café im Franziskaner. The event is organized in cooperation with the Historische Narrozunft Villingen e.V. and Mirella Fanelli. Artist Ingeborg Jaag will be in attendance.
