Based on the fairy tale by Wilhelm Hauff, this family tour led by Ortrud Jörg-Fuchs explores the tradition of Black Forest glass. Using various museum objects as examples, participants learn about the lengthy glass-making process and the history of this craft in the region. Selected scenes from the book *The Cold Heart* will be highlighted and reenacted using a paper theater.
This event, part of the accompanying program for the Christmas Arts and Crafts Market, is free of charge.
The Christmas market will take place on December 1 and 2 from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at the festively decorated Franziskaner Cultural Center.
During the Christmas tour at the Franciscan Museum, Dr. Anita Auer answers all those questions that tend to get forgotten amid the pre-Christmas rush: Why do we celebrate the birth of Christ on December 25, why do we celebrate for three days, why do we give each other gifts on this occasion, and since when have we had Christmas trees?
Even without a guided tour, the Franciscan Museum invites you to visit over the holidays. Bring your guests along and show them the treasures of our city. Admission is free on December 26 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the museum is closed on Christmas Eve and December 25.
Once again this year, schools and kindergartens have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the “real” history of Christmas at the Franciscan Museum—without Santa Claus, but surrounded by original works of art. The children explore the traditions in a playful way and learn not only what myrrh and frankincense are, but also that St. Nicholas came from Turkey. In front of a late-medieval tapestry depicting the Three Wise Men—on display only during this season—they can also stage their own nativity play.

In Villingen-Schwenningen, member institutions include the Franciscan Museum, the Watch Industry Museum, and the Local History and Watch Museum.
The Württemberg Clock Factory was founded in 1855 by Johannes Bürk, though the buildings that remain today date from later years. The impressive buildings on Bürkstraße were constructed in the two decades around 1900, when Richard Bürk successfully managed and expanded the company. During the tour, Dr. Ralf Ketterer will use exhibits and the buildings themselves to explain a fascinating chapter in Schwenningen’s industrial history.
In his lecture, Klaus Peter Karger takes a look back at 100 years of cinema history in Villingen and Schwenningen. The journalist and film producer conducted research in the city archives and unearthed many interesting details from the old records: Where the first “Kinematograph American” was located in 1910; the constant struggle between the local police and movie theater operators in the early years; the competition among movie theaters during the “golden” 1950s; and why jazz and the movies had a problem.
In October 2018, the municipal council approved the concept for an entirely new space for encounters, exchange, orientation, experiences, and a sense of belonging. Over the next four years, through 2022, projects will be developed to breathe life into the “Bürk-Areal” in Schwenningen.
